Our Motto

Chalo, Saath Mein

“Chalo, Saath Mein” is a Hindi phrase that can be roughly translated to “Let’s go together” or “Come along with us.” It’s an invitation to accompany someone or a group of people on a journey or an activity. In the context of the motto provided earlier, “Chalo, Saath Mein: Celebrating Our Queer South Asian Identity,” it signifies an inclusive and welcoming spirit, inviting individuals to join together in celebrating their shared identity and experiences as queer South Asians.

Our Origin Story

This Desi Queer Learning Hub closely aligns with the mission and values of Sher Pride, a registered charity dedicated to supporting queer South Asians and their friends, families, and allies.

This website was born out of a compelling need to address the rising challenges and discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in response to various anti-LGBTQ+ movements and incidents in the South Asian and broader community.

The founder of Sher Pride, Amar Sangha, has dedicated his life to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and social justice, particularly within the South Asian community. With a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by queer South Asians, he recognized the need for a dedicated platform to address these issues.

Rising Discrimination: In recent years, there has been a concerning increase in anti-Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) education efforts, anti-trans movements, and instances of discrimination, such as opposition to drag queen story time events. These issues were not only affecting the broader LGBTQ+ community but were specifically impacting queer South Asians within their own cultural and social contexts.

Empowerment through Information: Understanding the power of information and the potential for education and advocacy, Sher Pride decided to take proactive steps to combat this discrimination and support the LGBTQ+ South Asian community. Sher Pride envisioned a central hub that would provide accessible, accurate information, resources, and a sense of belonging for those affected by these challenges.

Sher Pride’s Legacy: Building upon Sher Pride’s reputation as a charity that advocates for LGBTQ+ rights within the South Asian community, the organization’s mission was expanded to include the creation of this website. The website would become an integral part of Sher Pride’s efforts to empower and support LGBTQ+ South Asians and their allies.

Fostering Unity and Acceptance: The website is meant to serve as a powerful tool for fostering unity, understanding, and acceptance within the South Asian community, countering the divisive narratives of anti-LGBTQ+ movements. It aims to create a safe and welcoming space where queer South Asians and their allies can find resources, connect with like-minded individuals, and learn how to advocate for their rights.

In summary, the launch of the Desi Queer Learning Hub by Sher Pride is a response to the pressing need to combat discrimination, provide support, and empower LGBTQ+ South Asians during a time when anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments and actions are on the rise. It stands as a testament to the organization’s commitment to advocacy, education, and social change within the community.
